We have been using the Velopex Aquacut unit for quite a number of years for cavity preparation and general prophylaxis work. We started with one unit and now have three, using one in each of our surgeries. In my view the Aquacut is as essential as the drill, and in time will prove to be in such general use one will wonder how modern dentistry can be carried out without them.
We use ‘Sylc for Aquacut’ powder for prophylaxis work, which is a fantastic practice builder due to its “wow” factor with patients. Their teeth are cleaner and whiter than I could ever have achieved with normal cleaning methods, and in a lot less time. The cost of the powder is slightly more than other powders, but this is more than made up for by the referrals from satisfied patients. We find that they now know the name ‘Sylc’ and look forward to and expect it to be used. As some dentists find they cannot afford conventional tooth whitening, ‘Sylc’ provides a great alternative. Patients will pay that bit more to have whiter teeth with this powder. The addition of Novamin in the BioGlass powder also helps to kick-start the re-mineralisation on the treated teeth which we are all striving to achieve.
With the use of the Aluminium Oxide powders in cavity preparation, it is possible to do preps without local anaesthetic solely using the Aquacut Quattro. On young children this is a brilliant tool to have, proving very useful for just “teasing open” those questionable fissures or that small dark area that may or may not be something sinister! It is ideal for use on phobic patients, and has many other uses including repairing old composites, cleaning crowns and inlays of cement.
The unit is easy to set up and use, with minimal extra-oral dust due to the combination of water preventing this, unlike older units. We are sometimes reluctant to change our work practices, but the use of air abrasion will enhance your treatment capabilities.
There is a minor learning curve in the use of an Aquacut but, when accustomed to its applications and techniques, it is a bit of kit that will be used time and time again in your daily practice, not left in a dark cupboard!
I think in the current economic climate we have to offer our patients as much value for money in dentistry as we can, both to encourage them to keep coming back and to get new patients to come through our doors. We are in the days where prevention and minimally invasive treatment is the order of the day and having an Aquacut Quattro is essential for this modern form of dentistry.
I can honestly say that I would recommend all dental practices consider making the modest investment in buying an Aquacut Quattro and the exciting Aluminium Oxide and new BioGlass powders that accompany it. This is an investment that you will never regret!
